Hello, I'm Deno.

  Deno

Hello and welcome to Deno's website.

Deno Deno is a very lucky horse who was rescued on Valentine's Day 2005, just before his 6th birthday on March 7th, and in spite of the state he was in and what he had been through, he still has an incredible capacity to love and trust people.

His story began when he was found dumped, shivering in a muddy field. He had no shelter or rugs to protect him from the weather, he had a broken jaw and was unable to eat and therefore starving. He had a hoof badly damaged by barbed wire, multiple small injuries, sores and ulcerating sarcoids (a kind of skin cancer).

After careful negotiations with the owner, Ruth ( whos daughter had seen Deno in the field ) bought him for the price that the knacker man would have paid for him...except for the fact that Deno's condition was so extreme, that he wasn't even able to be sent off for meat.He was so weak and sick that he could barely be got into a horse box to travel to his new home, and was later found to be around 700lb underweight.

Ruths total devotion saved his life and being able to live with her other horse Boomer, gave Deno a lot of confidence and so began his long and expensive recovery.

Also at this stage a lot of friends on an Ebay Community Board assured Ruth of their support in raising funds for this wonderful, gentle horse. Although nearly 18 hands high, apart from being cheeky occasionally, he has always remained a softie and so good natured, despite his previous hardships.

An online competition by the Ebay posters came up with some strange suggestions for a new name, but raised some pennies for each suggestion made and in the end he was named De Novo, which fittingly means 'new beginnings' which has been shortened to Deno.

There have been many fundraising auctions and raffles etc to help raise the funds for the ongoing vets treatment, farriers visits and horse dentist treatment, on top of the regular costs of keeping a horse....livery,food,worming, vaccinations and so on.

We thought Deno was set up for life in October 2005 as to save livery costs he moved to the home of a good friend of Ruth who had two rescue horses of her own.

Sadly, Deno has 4 left feet and is clumsy, and he had a fall and cut his knee which developed the serious infection Bacterial Cellulitis. He spent several weeks in 'horsepital' and we all spent a very worried Christmas 2005 knowing the condtion could be fatal.

Thanks to the vet and Ruth's constant care Deno made it through, but his immunity is impaired, which allowed sarcoids to run rampant and the ever-present worry of repeat infection in his knee wound if he damages it again - something as he is accident prone he is likely to do.

With that in mind Deno returned to livery which is not the challenging terrain than Deno couldn't safely cope with, so weekly livery fees ( £25 plus a week ) have to be found in addition to food and medicines. So Deno was happy back with Ruth who took over the reins again for the next few years.

During this time, life settled down for Deno with his life revolving happily round food and yet more food, although his sarcoids are an ongoing worry as they flare up from time to time and have received a lot of veterinary attention, plus the care needed to protect them from fly bother during the warm weather which could be a major problem if they become infected.

The latest news in 2009 is that Ruth’s health is now a problem for taking care of Deno and with a lot of soul searching and a heavy heart, she realised she would have to find Deno a new home. Thankfully this turned out very well as one of the Ebay members who already has 3 horses, was able to offer Deno a forever home.

So Deno has now moved to Surrey, near Gatwick and visitors are welcome by arrangement. Please use the contact page for the details of Frank and e-mail him at the rainbow e-mail address.

Deno has many supporters and tireless fundraisers from the Ebay community and these are known as 'Deno Defenders'.

Ruth puts it that she may have rescued him, but his Defenders saved him, so all Deno Defenders own a little piece of him.

Deno is a good cause, entirely reliant on being supported for his living expenses and veterinary care so would you like to be a Deno Defender?
